Amazon Web Services (AWS), an Amazon.com company, today announced a strategic partnership with Datacom, one of the largest locally-owned professional IT services companies in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ). Together the companies will help businesses and government organisations across ANZ accelerate cloud migration and modernisation, using generative AI including Amazon Q Developer and AWS Transform, to streamline processes and drive efficiencies and productivity.

The partnership comes at a critical time for organisations looking to migrate from legacy technology systems, or modernise their current cloud environment to take advantage of AI-driven capabilities, accelerate innovation, and remain competitive in an increasingly AI-powered marketplace, while minimising disruption on business operations.

Organisations globally are leveraging cloud and AI solutions to help deliver improved outcomes for citizens, patients and healthcare workers.

“Generative AI is revolutionising how customers across ANZ modernise their business, and it also presents an opportunity for our strategic partners like Datacom to transform their managed service business.” said Chris Casey, AWS Director, Partnerships, Asia Pacific and Japan. “By partnering with Datacom, we are bringing the benefits of cutting-edge AWS AI-powered tools to our customers to help them innovate with greater speed and confidence.”

“For many organisations we talk to, the need to modernise legacy systems is a key priority to deliver greater resiliency, efficiency, and new digital experiences – but cost and risk are a real concern. Our partnership with AWS is key to delivering cloud-based digital foundations for these outcomes while also unlocking value through generative AI services such as Amazon Q for app modernisation and migration," said Mike Walls, Datacom Director Cloud. “Through this AI-led approach, our AI agents can write up to 70% of the code, leading to significant cost savings of between 30%-50% for our customers - in some cases even more - and a significant reduction in time spent to complete the project.”

As part of the agreement, Datacom is leveraging Amazon Q Developer, AWS’s generative AI-powered assistant, across 1,700 of its developers, to support cloud migration and modernisation processes for its customers. With Amazon Q Developer, Datacom has already been able to enhance developer productivity and accelerate application development cycles while streamlining and accelerating code migration projects, allowing for faster and more efficient modernisation of legacy applications. Using tools such as Amazon Q Developer, Datacom is transforming how its customers modernise their technology to handle generative AI workloads, using AI assistants to write and test code as well as write APIs.

To help customers further leverage generative AI, Datacom is also using AWS Transform, a cloud service designed to accelerate and simplify the modernisation and migration of enterprise workloads. This service provides Datacom with agentic AI—specialised AI assistants—to automate and streamline complex transformation tasks that traditionally require significant manual effort and expertise. For example, it can help customers automate and improve services like payroll and customer service.

Modernising cloud architecture is essential for organisations to meet the performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency demands of generative AI workloads. AI-powered tools on AWS are helping Datacom support customers by generating migration plans that include architecture patterns recommended by AWS best practices, automating the analysis of existing applications and infrastructure, and converting legacy code to cloud-native applications with minimal manual intervention. This accelerates the development of new cloud-native features and capabilities while reducing migration risks through AI-powered testing and validation.

The AWS-Datacom partnership emphasises the ongoing commitment both organisations have toAustralia and New Zealand. In 2012, AWS launched its first infrastructure with the AWS Asia Pacific (Sydney) Region, followed by the AWS Asia Pacific (Melbourne) Region in 2023, with plans to invest an estimated AU$13.2 billion on infrastructure between now and 2027. This investment is estimated to contribute AU$35 billion to Australia's total gross domestic product (GDP) by 2027, and support an estimated average of 11,000 full-time jobs including construction, facility maintenance, engineering, and telecommunications, among other roles. In New Zealand, AWS is investing NZ$7.5 billion to launch an AWS Asia Pacific (New Zealand) Region this year.
