If lipsticks were used as a gauge of consumer spending in past crises, this pandemic may have crowned a new barometer: fragrances.

We put away the lipstick as we spent more time at home and when out, were hidden behind masks. On the other hand, fragrances – both for the body and home – have seen an increase in popularity, as many of us explore ways to make ourselves feel and live better while at home.

Sales aren’t the only thing coming up roses with scents. Across Amazon.com.au, fragrance preferences have bloomed with the pandemic, with shopping trends on amazon.com.au indicating Australians are shifting from celebrity perfumes to more niche and high-end luxury brands. Labels that have experienced the biggest surges in popularity so far this year on amazon.com.au include classic and cult favourites such as Armani, Calvin Klein, Christian Dior, Higo Boss, Viktor & Rolf and Versace.

Put it down to a return to forever favourites—while shoppers might be spending less on luxury goods these days, independent research has found that spending on ‘timeless’ products, particularly in the beauty category, hasn’t been affected.
